So anyone who knows me knows I’m not a fan of footie – I cannot understand 22 men chasing a ball around a field/pitch for 90 minutes and then getting vulgar amounts of money for doing that. I also cannot wrap around them spitting everywhere, and then falling in the same field. Yuck!
What is undeniable though, is the worldwide attention the sport carries, especially when there’s a major league. And what can be more ‘major’ than the World Cup?
Anyway, so I had just touched down in Abuja (from Lagos) when I saw on Twitter that star for Uruguay’s football team, Luiz Suarez, had just bitten some Italian guy called Chellini on the shoulder, during the match! Again, I didn’t even know there was a match on, talk less of who was playing. Apparently, Suarez has bitten people before during matches – have to wonder why a grown man does that but let’s move on.
What impressed/shocked/amazed/amused/insert-other-like-words was the speed with which brands jumped on the incident and spun it to suit their purposes on Twitter. Incredible!
The second screen is even more powerful than the first. One reason? Speed/immediacy of conversion. I grabbed a few off Twitter, and a couple others from Mashable. And I grabbed tweets too, the ones that made me laugh the most!
Laughs (and the fact that this Suarez fellow needs a doctor – and fast) aside, where was your company last night? Did you miss an opportunity to make an impression, or score massive impressions for your brand? Or are you not just hungry enough for real time marketing?
